Factors affecting diesel prices in India
Dynamic Pricing
The diesel rate in India is revised at 6 am every day. India uses a dynamic fuel pricing mechanism that results in frequent revisions to the price of diesel, it varies from state to state and district to district. Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) including Bharat Petroleum, Indian Oil, and Hindustan Petroleum set the price of diesel daily. The PPAC (Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell), under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, oversees this diesel price-setting process every day.
The current day diesel rate is being calculated based on the following factors:
- Payment to the refineries
- Excise duty
- Dealer commission
- Value-Added Tax(VAT)
Formula to calculate retail price of diesel in India
Distributors buy price from OMCs + Excise duty + Dealer's Commission + VAT = Retail price of diesel.
Several factors affect the diesel rate in India including the import cost of crude oil, the global demand for crude oil, national and state wise taxes, rupee and dollar exchange rate, and oil refinery consumption ratio.
